The Speed Trap: Why Fast Careers Break First
We glorify speed. Promoted in 12 months. Six figures by 26. “30 Under 30.”
But velocity without foundation creates fragile footing.
Fast careers look impressive on LinkedIn. Underneath, I keep seeing the same cracks:
1. Hollow resumes:
Titles outpace depth. When the market shifts, you can’t pivot. You managed growth, but never a downturn.
2. No comeback muscle:
If you never fail, you never learn to recover. The first real crisis breaks you.
3. Shallow networks:
Transactional connections vanish when your star stops rising. You need people who vouch for you when you’re down.
4. Golden handcuffs:
Lifestyle inflates with income. You become wealthy on paper but poor in choices.
Fast careers give you the view from the top without teaching you how to climb.
By 2026, the winners won’t be the fastest risers. They’ll be the most durable.
My rule now: Every year, do one thing that doesn’t advance your career, but deepens your craft, character, or community.
Are you building speed or building strength?
I’ll go first. At 28 I was managing a team of 12 and had no idea how to handle layoffs. It broke me. What was your “I’m not ready” moment?
